Well, it’s time for a mid-year wrap up and a look to the new year. The Holiday Season is over, or nearly so, and the second semester at TLS is almost upon us. Our Christmas concert (in conjunction with the Advent service) was well received and the young band did quite well. I was proud of them. They should, if all goes well, be even better in the spring.
Our first performing event of the new year will be for Grandparents’ (or Significant Others’) Day on March 9. This is a light-hearted concert to honor some of those who are important in our lives, and to herald, we hope, the coming of warmer and drier weather.
Next, on April 20, the band will compete in the annual Fine Arts Festival at Trinity Lutheran School in St. Joseph—a highlight of the year. The band will play two selections from different musical periods in front of two music judges. The judges write comments—what was good, what might be improved, suggestions for improvement, etc., and award a rating of I-V based on several musical factors. The same is true for solos, small ensembles and art projects, the only difference being that they are graded by a single judge. This year, TLS plans to enter five such events in addition to the full band. The Festival is open to the public at no charge, and all are welcome at any time throughout the day. We will need drivers, and you as friends, parents or TLS staff have always come through. Usually, the band plays in the morning with the other events occurring after lunch. We’ll return in time for school dismissal. As April 20 nears, more finite information will be distributed via your students’ Friday folders and this website.
Lastly, Sunday, June 10 is 8th grade graduation. Please mark your calendars now. All band students need to be present. Normally we play a selection at the beginning of the ceremony followed by the processional and one other piece near the end of the ceremony.
The band expresses its appreciation for your support and attendance at its performances. Without it, quite frankly, there would be no instrumental music program at TLS. If you have questions relating to the program, or even wish to discuss your band student, please don’t hesitate to call me (269) 353-3834.
** As always, thank you for your support of the music programs as TLS**
